A brief discussion on the quality appraisal of PVC edge banding

With the improvement of living standards, my country's furniture industry has flourished, and the furniture-related accessories industry has also attracted much attention, such as PVC edge banding. The main function of edge banding is to seal the cross section of the board to prevent the board from being damaged by adverse factors (mainly moisture) in the environment and during use, prevent the volatilization of formaldehyde inside the board, and achieve the effect of decoration. At present, it is mainly suitable for mid-to-high-end furniture, kitchenware, bedroom suites, office series, etc. Whether the quality of edge banding can meet the standards is crucial to the overall quality of furniture. How to identify whether the quality of PVC edge banding is qualified, we can start from the following points.


1. The content of calcium carbonate powder (commonly known as lime powder) in edge banding


Generally, PVC edge banding contains calcium carbonate powder, but too high a content of calcium carbonate powder will make the structure of PVC loose, which will seriously affect the quality of PVC edge banding. The problems caused by too high a content of calcium carbonate powder are:


1. Whitening, that is, after the edge banding is bent into a small arc, whitening will appear on the edge part, and this whitening will not be restored after the edge banding is straightened again.


2. Edge jumping, that is, it is easy to produce edge jumping when trimming the edge banding.


3. The edge of the edge banding after trimming and grinding has poor glossiness, so the appearance effect will be poor.


4. Cracking. Due to the high content of calcium carbonate, the edge banding has no toughness and the internal structure is loose. It will crack when slightly subjected to external force, especially in transportation at low temperatures.


2. Back glue (bridging agent)


PVC cannot be directly bonded to the board very well. The quality of the back glue (actually not glue, but plays the role of an intermediate bridge, so it is also called a bridging agent) directly affects the bonding effect. Especially when the weather is cold, the workshop temperature is relatively low, and the efficiency of hot melt glue and back glue is greatly reduced. This is often attributed to the quality of the edge banding by furniture manufacturers. The best way to deal with it is to replace it with a high-temperature hot melt glue with higher viscosity and purity, increase the working temperature of the hot melt glue, increase the room temperature, and preheat the edge banding (quality must be guaranteed).


3. The curvature of the edge banding strip itself


When the edge banding strip is bonded and extruded, in order to prevent the loss of glue, a good edge banding strip should have a slight inward bend in its width direction. Inferior edge banding strips are flat or even warped, which easily leads to poor bonding.


Currently, the inferior edge banding strips on the market have a calcium carbonate powder content of more than 60% to reduce costs. As for the different equivalent products of the same brand, their calcium carbonate powder content is also mainly determined by their calcium carbonate powder content.
